The Coming Conclave

This October 3-5th I will be a participant at Conclave 33, a science fiction and fantasy convention in Romulus, Michigan. For those interested, the panels I'll be participating in are "Fanfiction", "H.P. Lovecraft, Influences in Popular Culture", and "Politics in Science Fiction and Fantasy". For those who know my sometimes colorful character, I promise to behave. Especially in the presence of Michelle West, with whom I will share the panel for "Politics in Science Fiction and Fantasy". A contributor for The Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy, she has written numerous novels, including "The Sundered" Tetraology" and "The Sacred Hunt" duology. I'm looking forward to meeting her and hearing what she has to offer in discussion of genre.

Besides myself, William Jones, publisher of Elder Sign Press will be present. Also associate editor Chuck Zaglanis will be presenting as well. And Ferrell "Rick" Moore will be doing numerous presentations. Rick, known around here as vwriter, is a martial arts specialist, certified paranormal investigator and a student of alchemy. In addition to his presentation on H.P. Lovecraft, I think, and I'm sure he can correct me, he'll be doing a presentation on secret societies in literature and the real world, as well as a few panels on horror writing and perhaps some workshopping with burgeoning writers.

I think it's going to be a good time. And despite the skepticism that William Jones and Chuck Zaglanis may have regarding my ability to behave myself, I promise I'll be the model of decorum.

Model of decorum? The hell with that! Shake them up.
Have fun.

Don't encourage him aimless. Please. Give him a link to a Prozac site with BIG discounts. If he won't take them at the convention, William, Chuck and I will. Wait, they're on his side...

Send me that Prozac website link, will you.

I bet Stewart will be a kitten. Now Vwriter is the guy they have to worry about. The quiet types are always the craziest.

Aimless, I have sworn off public displays of ME. At least I'll try. I think it's not about me, it's about making sure that the person who is paying money for a panel discussion gets the best panel discussion they can. My ego goes out the window.

Rick, did I tell you how much I am looking forward to your presentation. Especially the one on secret societies in science fiction and fantasy. I'm looking forward to this.

Charles, fellow Miskatonic University contributor, thank you. And as for Rick being one of the crazy have no idea.

I suspect the only time Stewart "What are your sources!" Sternberg could behave is when we finally plant him in the ground; and even then the local flora and fauna will be tainted. : )

As for Rick, I greatly look forward to the standing room only events awaiting him and his one man shows. It will be delicious watching him try not to meander off-topic to unified field theory or his uncle's gout or somesuch.

The bliss I expect from "How to write a scary story" alone will allow me to die a happy man irregardless what befalls me throughout my life.

Seriously though, I'm looking forward to our panels together.

I sense a public hanging coming on.

Is SCARY STORY a subgenre Rick? What would some of the most common elements of that subgenre be, and how would it differ from say...oh...I don't know...horror? Or urban fantasy? Just asking.

Chuck. The rope.

I know it is totally beside the point and not in any way relevent to the post, but there is a Romulus town? Really? Romulus? As in Romulus and Remus? Not Rome? Romulus? (I'm repeating myself, but I never heard of it.)

Stewart Sternberg said...

fab....there is a Romulus. And it is an armpit, nestled by Detroit Metro Airport. A sad little town with no personality.

This looks like one event I wish I were attending. I think it would be fun just to see Stewart be a kitten. Wonder how often that happens?

Stewart Sternberg said...

Mark, as entertaining as my kittenish behavior might be, it will be nothing compared to Rick doing SCARY STORIES. I'm going to video tape that sucker and sell it on ebay.
